The 500-hour service is the workhorse of any preventative maintenance plan. Done properly, it adds years to the asset and keeps your fuel and parts budget predictable. Done badly — or skipped — it shows up as a bigger bill at 1000 or 2000 hours.
What's in a proper 500-hour kit
For diesel: engine oil + filter, fuel filter, air filter primary + secondary, hydraulic filter, transmission filter, all greasing points, brake check, mast chain inspection. For electric: hydraulic filter, ISO 32 oil top-up, brake fluid, contactor inspection, battery water, terminal cleaning, BMS log download.
Why the cheap quote isn't a saving
The most common shortcut is fitting one filter type and skipping the others. Air filters in dusty SA yards block in 200–300 hours; missing one stresses the engine and pushes injector wear.
